Obituary of Nora Wojciechowski

 
     
     

IRON MOUNTAIN — Nora Margaret Wojciechowski (née Jacobs), 72, of Royal Oak and Iron River, passed away Thursday, Oct. 18, 2018, at Aspirus Hospital in Iron River.

She was born April 15, 1946, in Iron River, daughter of the late Nicholas and Kathryn (Swift) Jacobs and granddaughter of the late Jacob and Nora Jacobs of Crystal Falls.

Nora grew up in Iron River and graduated from Iron River High School, Class of 1964. She went on to attend Northern Michigan University where she received her Bachelor of Arts Degree and later her Master of Arts in teaching.

Nora married Ron Wojciechowski on Aug. 9, 1969, in Iron River. She taught high school in Highland Park from 1969 until she retired in 1995. Throughout her career, Nora was a sponsor for the National Honor Society and a science department head. She also worked with her colleagues across the state to pioneer a remote learning curriculum, using advanced technology to engage students across multiple classrooms in cooperative learning.

Nora was an active member of St. Mark Orthodox Church in Rochester Hills, and St. Mary Orthodox Church in Iron Mountain. She was a leader in the Orthodox Christian Women’s Association of Southeast Michigan.

Nora chaired the St. Mark Prayer Shawl and Prosphora Ministries to ensure community support. Her giving spirit also drove her to deliver for Meals on Wheels weekly for decades. She enjoyed the deep bond she developed with her clients.

Nora was a master gardener and she was proud of the work she did with the community gardens in Royal Oak. She bonded deeply and easily with almost everybody she met. She cared more than most for so many.

Nora is survived by her loving husband of 49 years, Ron; one daughter, Helen (Matthew) Sernett of Seattle and their daughter, Wade Nora Sernett; one sister, Kaye Rosa (Ken) Lowe of Aurora, Ohio; two nieces, Kathy (Frank) Mahoney and their daughter, Caitlin of Ann Arbor, and Julie (Marc) Ziehm of Rochester Hills; one nephew, Michael Wojciechowski of Commerce Township, Mich.; many cousins and friends.

In addition to her parents, Nora was preceded in death by one niece, Laura Livingston.

Visitation will be Tuesday, Oct. 23 from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Jacobs Funeral Home in Iron Mountain. Trisagion Prayers will be recited at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

The funeral service will be at noon Wednesday, Oct. 24 at St. Mary Orthodox Church in Iron Mountain. Fr. Mark Hagan will officiate.

Burial will take place in Evergreen Cemetery, Crystal Falls.
